I spoke with a friend about sports betting, and he explained that he thought governments shouldn’t legalize sports betting due to gambling’s social ills. I’ve always had a libertarian orientation on gambling (i.e., people should be free to gamble and deal with the consequences if they wish), but I wanted to take the opportunity to review the literature on gambling as it relates to personal and public health.
I know gambling addiction is an issue, but to what extent, and is gambling so bad for society that governments should ban it?
